Ged Clarke: Summer Bin Collection

I am reliably informed that the question currently being asked at the school gates is:

'When does the summer dustbin collection start?'

Mothers are already conscious of nappy smells, and this when summer temperatures are below average.

One young mother is so concerned that she has already had her husband wash out their dustbin in order to ensure it cannot become a health hazard for her children.

Sadly, he will have to do it many times before the summer ends.

Labour has cut this excellent and much appreciated Conservative summer service, for purely political reasons.

This has to be the explanation because we know from the Council Budget, which was passed earlier this year, that money is available.

You might ask the local Labour MP, who is implacable about what he sees elsewhere as assaults on frontline services, why he is not pressing his Labour colleagues for the return of the summer dustbin collection.

We can expect him to remain as silent as their Manifesto on the subject. There will be no concern expressed for the lost job opportunities resulting from Labour’s decision to remove the service.

Help may be on hand in the form of Eric Pickles, the Communities Secretary. He remains determined to reintroduce weekly bin collections. He points to an increase in rat and insect infestations along with a rise in fly tipping.

How long before this local Labour policy vents similar problems on the hedgerows of Gedling?
